August is ending

I can tell that summer is starting to slip away.  It always starts with school starting back up- it’s not so much a change in the weather at first, as it is a change in ambiance.  We’ve had a milder August than what I expected.  Last month, when we were planning the Aedrinia ritual, we were expecting this month to be a real scorcher.  People in my group thought it would be too hot to have a ritual outside.  There have been many nights this month that we’ve turned off the air conditioner and opened the windows, and a night or two it got too cold with the windows open.  So tomorrow is it- we’ll be saying goodbye to summer, having our ritual at the river.

I will miss summer, my favorite season, but I think the changing of the seasons will do me some good.  Truth be told, I’ve been feeling a little out of sorts this month- part of it is the feeling of being kind of  “out-of-the-loop” with people and situations.  I sometimes feel that I don’t always get the most out of life, and that I need to plan ahead more and think things through.  I guess that will be part of my Samhain resolutions.  I used to make lists a lot.  I have gotten out of that habit, but I think I will start again that useful practice…

things to do for an ideal summer

*Go swimming!  Summer is not really lived if this activity is not done at least once, preferably three times.  [I need to go two more times before summer’s really over.]
*Have a BBQ and/or picnic with roasted marshmallows and corn on the cob.
*Eat watermelon on the porch until I’m stuffed. [Done.]
*Prepare and eat required summer desserts; peach cobbler, strawberry shortcake, blueberry crisp, all with ice-cream.  [I’ve got 2 out of 3 to go.]
*Go to the drive-in movies.  [Didn’t do this year, because of baby.]
*Forage for wild greens; dock, poke, etc. (this is more for spring/ early summer).  [Did this one, but not enough.]
*Grow a garden and can some of the produce.  [Didn’t do this year because of my circumstances.]
*Attend a free outdoor concert.
*Eat fresh blackberries off the vine.  [Done!]

“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”  –Henry James

“It’s designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything is new again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains comes, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone.”  –Bartlett Giamatti

“All we need is the truth in our hand. Someone to call a friend. Never fear the darkness. All we need is just the sun in the sky. And the hope of a summer to come with the meaning of love.”  –Anonymous
