A FULL MOON RITE

Standard

Though we have no evidence of the Celts having ever commemorated the full moon, there is some indication that they honored the new moon with a feast and libations. Knowing this, I still prefer to commemorate the full moon with a ritual…
You may recognize the format- this is a part of my “little ritual” series, with materials from, and adapted from; ADF, the Carmia Gadelica, and other sources.

Circumambulation (circle ritual area three times. Skip this if ritual is at home.)

Purpose (ring bell three times)  “I am here to honor the Moon in its fullness.”

Three Realms Blessing
“As it was, as it is, as it evermore shall be — I stand at the Center of Earth, Sky and Sea.”

Fire Lighting
“I kindle the sacred fire in wisdom, love, and power.”  (light fire)  “Sacred fire, burn within me.”

Hail to the Spirits & to the Moon
“To the Three Kindred: Nature Spirits, Ancestors, and Deities, I give offering and welcome.”
(place offerings in bowl or fire)
“Hail, Star Mother, Arianrhod, Lady of the Silver Wheel, I honor you this night.”
(place offering in bowl or fire)

chant:  “Jewel of the Night” (by Lisa Thiel, inspired by the Carmina Gadelica)
Hail to thee o Jewel of the Night- Hail to thee o Lady of the Heavens
Hail to thee o Jewel of the Night- Hail to thee o Queen of the Stars
Hail to thee o Jewel of the Night- Hail to thee o Mother of the Worlds
Hail to thee.
(pour libations)
(continue song)
O thou fair Moon of the Heavens – O thou luminous lamp of grace
She who made thee created me likewise – Thou Queen-maiden of loveliness.
O thou Queen-maiden of virtue – Thou Queen-maiden of radiance
Thou glorious jewel that shines through the ages – Thou glorious jewel that shines for all.

At this time, do magical workings and/or divination.

Moon Blessing Cup
Hold a chalice of mead or milk up to the edge of the moon.  Visualize the power and blessings of the moon pouring down into your chalice.
Moon Blessing Cup chant: (adapted from “Full Moon Song” by Jennifer Reif)
Silver disk of the moon, silver wine from the black chalice of the heavens-
Silver disk of the moon, fill my cup with the blessings of the heavens.
(drink deeply)

Parting Blessing
“I offer my thanks to Arianrhod, Lady of the Silver Wheel, Mother of the Stars.
I offer my thanks to the Kindred.
May the Three Sacred Kins bring joy to all beings,
and renew the ancient wisdom.
As it was, as it is, as it evermore shall be.”

  1. This post is particularly timely this full moon as it will be the Lunar perigee this month- an event that will not recur for another 19 years, the time it takes for the moon to complete its grand cycle.
